REVIEW / On Fort Lauderdale beach, Atlantic Resort’s restaurant reborn as a brilliant brasserie

SCENE
Replacing Trina, which had lost its way, East End Brasserie is a new restaurant. The decor is much brighter and more casual, reflecting the French bistro theme. Everything is done in-house, including the ice cream and desserts You won’t find the usual sky-high beach markups. The most expensive dish is a $36 beef Wellington.
FOOD
Entree: coriander-crusted rack of lamb... The decadent beef Wellington is a seven-ounce portion of ultra tender filet mignon slathered with mushroom duxelles.
Sides: the beets in ginger cream sauce and the thinly sliced, caramelized brussels sprouts
Desserts: Creamsicle crème brûlée, elegant dark chocolate mousse bombe

Inside Fort Lauderdale "The eggs were competently poached and the hollandaise was light and good. The potatoes were special; the skins were cooked to a crispy texture similar to tempura; while the inside was soft."
New Times "Traditional French onion soup, escargots, and tuna tartare share space under the appetizers ($9 to $19) with butternut squash wontons and a hearts of palm salad ($10)."
Open Table "Service was attentive but not overdone. I recommend this place for a nice relaxing night out"

HOW 2 / Red Velvet Cake Recipe Demonstration

Stephanie Jaworski of Joyofbaking.com demonstrates how to make a Red Velvet Cake. A Red Velvet Cake is very dramatic looking with its bright red color that is offset by a creamy white frosting. If we look beyond the striking appearance of this cake, we will find that it has a mild chocolate flavor with a moist and tender crumb. The mild chocolate flavor comes from adding a small amount of cocoa powder to the batter and buttermilk gives it a moist and tender crumb.

TV / Once the province of how-to cooking shows, food media has extended its reach—but has it become too big?

Next week, ABC’s All My Children will be replaced after four decades on the air by The Chew, a lifestyle show whose hosts include three chefs and which stars the food in your refrigerator. Who could have predicted that network TV would trade sex, scandal, and drama for dough hooks and mixing bowls? But consumers’ relationship with food now has less to do with lining stomachs and more to do with entertainment and reaction to an economy that fosters domesticity.

PROFILE / The Cheesecake Factory: Feeding the 'Common Man'

Walk into one of David Overton's 153 restaurants and chances are you'll end up ordering something that's been "cheesecake-ized." That is, a dish that represents a twist on a classic flavor served to you in a portion size that's large -- very large.

"It's what America wants to eat," Overton said.

Overton, 65, is the founder and chief executive of the Cheesecake Factory restaurant chain, based in Calabasas, Calif. It's one of the most profitable restaurant chains in America with annual sales of $1.6 billion, thanks to menu items ranging from the eponymous cheesecake to pasta carbonara to chicken tortillas to miso-glazed salmon. The latter dish was inspired by the miso-glazed cod served at an icon of haute cuisine, the Japanese restaurant Nobu.

Burger King's Mega BK Stacker, starring one of the manliest men of all—the UFC's longest reigning middleweight champion, Anderson Silva.

For those unfamiliar with Silva, he's famous not only for his mixed martial arts fighting but also for his unexpectedly high-pitched voice. (He's also Brazilian.) Burger King has a bit of fun with this by having Silva lip-sync "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton, which ends on a glass-shatteringly high note (not to mention juxtaposing him with a pair of tweeting songbirds). The object of Silva's affection is, of course, the Mega BK Stacker, an enormous pile of grease that appears to be made up of about 20 layers of meat and cheese. The serenade takes the form of a schlocky '90s music video, with Silva dressed in the requisite all-white suit, turtleneck, and black leather gloves as he over-emotes into a gold microphone—that is, when he's not busy playing the harp or staring longingly at the rotating hamburger.

The Amazone paiche (pronounced pie-ché) gives the health and environmentally conscious a farm-raised option for an endangered wild, prehistoric Peruvian fish, considered one of the largest river fish in the world.

REVIEW / Luigi's Coal Oven Pizza in Fort Lauderdale: Pizza's Not the Best Thing on the Menu at This Las Olas Joint

PLACE Luigi's is a tight space. It's so small that your gut will plunge into the table when the diner behind you so much as fidgets in his seat.
MENU Pizza balanced out by family-style house salads, oven-roasted wings, and a few pasta specials....  three pizzas — made on two different dates weeks apart — had something in common "the middle of the pie was limp, thin, and undercooked"  Only real parmigiano reggiano, Italian mozzarella, and romana are used for cheese. The tomatoes, prosciutto, Parma ham, and salami are all from Italy too. For an informal pizzeria, Luigi's offers an extensive wine list.
